11/18/2006 - Steering Column Rebuild, SN95 Rear Discs

One of those other things to do, the steering column needed at least clean up and paint. Once I stopped to think about it, this is about the last thing that wasn't going to be torn completely down and rebuilt so why not.

I am glad I did pull it apart now since there was a nice mud daubers nest (middle right) inside the head unit that would have eventually broken up and messed things up or at least been messy falling out on the floor.

After all parts cleaned and painted, ready for re-assembly.

Steering column back together and ready for re-install. Can't install it until I get the steering box rebuilt though.

Received the UltraStang SN95 rear disc brackets this week. Here are the brackets with one of the calipers bolted up. You get the brackets, backing plate spacers, rotor spacers and bolts.

Here is another pic of the other side of the caliper/bracket. You also get bolts to mount the anti-moan brackets and splash shields if used.

The biggest question mark is still the emergency brake cable. After reviewing how things work I am going to try this route. Using an existing brake cable from a drum setup I am making a small mounting bracket in an existing to hold the cable housing end and drill/tap the other. Once finalized I will round out the corners of the bracket and make it look much better.

I believe the old return spring can be used to keep the cable from binding on the original cable stop. The cable housing only has to move about 1 1/2" longer to reach. At this time I'm not sure how much slack there is in the housing. Man, I should have taken those pics on something else, that old bar stool is too busy.

I thought I had found a great paint color to use to match the original dark metal flake paint used for the column, etc. The paint matches great but it was a real pain to lay on. Even after 800 grit sanding, cleaning and tacking there were some place the paint would not stay on. Had to be something there but I finally just touched it up by hand.

Here is the E-Brake cable bracket after drilling and tapping the other hole. The extra bolt in the kit for the splash shields was used.

Same bracket 'cleaned up' to look better. Just needs to be sanded down, painted and final mounted.

Since I had the caliper brackets and wanted to see how the E-Brake bracket was going to fit I had to mock up the left rear. The bracket and axle are not tightened down but I have a pretty good idea of how it is going to look/fit now. Obviously there is lots of clean up, paint, etc on the rear side of the car still.

Here is a rear view of the setup. I'll end up painting this caliper since the other side was purchased separately and will not match.

Here is the view from the front to back showing where the E-Brake cable bracket will be located. It isn't much off from the original location in the backing plate but pitches up. I mocked up the cable from the frame tab to hear and believe it will work.
