1/1/2007 - Test fit TKO - Built Cross member

I managed to get the TKO 5 speed stuffed up into the car by myself.. ouch. Took some planning, a floor jack and some muscle but it's stabbed for mock up. I had planned on building my own scratch cross member but after getting the trans lined up and test fitting some of the cross members I have I realized the original FMX unit was pretty close to fitting, it just interfered with trans case some.

After some measuring and test fitting I hacked out the offending portions to get the cross member to work. I'll add re-enforcement plates on the bottom side once all the details are worked out. What is nice about the FMX member is the single side mounting point allows easy access to the speedo cable drive which is where the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) needs to go for the computer. It adds a two or three inches to the length of the cable mount but should work great with this piece.

Here is a rear view of the mounted tranny. Clearance is about 1/4" or more on the top side which should work. Hopefully there won't but much up and down movement to rattle the tunnel.

This is a side view of the cross member showing the cut out portions. I still have to weld in some vertical supports to finalize the unit.

I did have to cut the shifter hole out some to let the Pro 5.0 shifter fit through. The original shifter hole is slightly off center and 5 speed shifter sits on center so some trimming was needed. The strap is the safety harness in case a jack or jack stand let loose while I'm under the car/trans.
